The One I Wrote For You

One of the things that I deal with on a continuous basis is how to stay true to who I am and who I want to be.  It is so easy in todays world to be easily pulled in other directions.  No, this isn’t a deep introspective that you’ll need a dictionary to break into readable parts. It’s just the truth that I know who I am but sometimes things happen and I find myself kinda veering away from the person that I want to be.  One of my biggest hopes for my kids is that they’ll be true to themselves in all things and not easily swayed by public opinion or pressure.  Peer pressure for our kids is real and I want them to understand that it will lead you in the wrong way if you give into it. It’s important in life that we have an internal map for ourselves and our lives. If you don’t have that than it’s easy to stray and slowly but surely you’ll wind up somewhere else or more importantly as someone else that you don’t recognize anymore.  This weekend we sat down as a family and watched a new movie that you can find in select Texas theaters on December 5th, The One I Wrote For You.  The One I Wrote For You is about a man who had a chance to be one of the most popular singers in America and he walked away because he couldn’t do it the way he knew he needed to in order to stay true to himself. Years later a second chance arrises and the desire to get back what he almost had becomes too strong and he looses his way. I really liked the movie. I loved the fact that his wife saw that he had buried his dreams in order to provide for his family. She’s the one that pushed him to try one more time to chase after them but also told him that she would support him if he honestly told her that his current life was his dream.   I loved that his daughter seems to have a swear jar with her at all times labeled “college fund”. Ha! I only heard one complete curse word but there was one interrupted one. I still feel like this movie was safe for my kids to watch and we are very strict about language in this house.  I loved that his early integrity caused a change in his friend and manager who later is able to hold him accountable when he looses his way.  The way we live our lives have a great impact on others than we realize.  Most importantly I loved the end. Not to ruin it for you if you plan to see it but the main character, Ben, chooses the unpopular path, the one of integrity and love rather than stardom.  But it turns out that he didn’t have to give himself up to find his dreams. When he stayed true to himself, he was given his dream – his true pure dream without having to compromise or transform himself.  It was a great movie for our family to watch together. As an adult I needed a reminder to not give up on my dreams or change to achieve them. For my kids it just showed them that sometimes the less popular way is the best way.  Interested in the film?
